Men of the Monmouth Rebellion: An Extract from the book 'Luppitt: Parish, Church and People'

"And so we come to another prominent period of English history in which the men of Luppitt became involved, known as the Monmouth Rebellion. James, Duke of Monmouth, had landed in the west country, where he thought there was a stronghold of Protestant dissent, and marched via Axminster and Taunton towards Sedgemoor. Gathering sympathisers along the route, men from Luppitt joined up with his rather undisciplined force.

Thanks to Mr McDonald Wigfield MA, who in 1985 published his book entitled "The Monmouth Rebellion", we know the names of thirty-four Luppitt men who left their homes to support the Duke. Mr Wigfield has given us the following list of men involved, and what is known of their fate. Most were described as "yeoman" except Gideon Dare and Thomas Francklin who were called "husbandmen"."
