The last column specifies which county each individual was born in, again not very accurate. The James and Mary Batstone of this census are I think your great, great grandparents, We could also assume that Clement Batstone living next door might well be his son. Your great grandparents are already living at Beacon in Luppitt and your grandfather John is listed as 7 years old. Southleigh 1851. The James and Mary Batstone of Smith's Cottage Southleigh are listed, he as parish clerk which involved recording and correspodence of matters involving the Parish Council and also leading the responses in the service of the Church of England. His wife Mary is given as being born at Pilsdon in Dorset only about 15 miles from Southleigh. Also listed is their son Joseph who would have been born about 1825 and Mary who could be his daughter. The Clement Batstone of the previous census has declined the blacksmith trade and taken to labouring. The spelling of Batstone is quite consistent in Southleigh. Whites Trade Directory 1850. Estate to my sons John and Bartholomew daughter Jane Loveridge and children, my sister Joan Blackmore, my Wife. Executer Bartholomew Batston. 10th December 1991. Visited Southleigh church on a cold frosty morning, found the stones in the wall with the name Batstone:- In memory of Robert Batstone who died December 28th 1819 aged 71 also of Elizabeth Batstone who died March 3rd 1821 aged 75. In memory of Martha Batstone who departed this life October 2nd 1796 aged 75, also John Batstone husband of the above who died January 6th 1807 aged 88. No other gravestones marked Batstone. The church was enlarged in about 1827 and the wall with the Batstone headstones in it is an extension of the altar area and I would sugest that the headstones were moved so that the extension could be built. What normally happens when grave stones have to be moved for a church extension or for over crowding reasons is that they are leant up against the inside of the cemetery perimiter wall or some times used as flag stone flooring inside the church, it is slightly unusual to find headstones in the outside wall. The remains must be under the new alter area and I suppose you could say that the head stones are as close as possible to where the bodies are buried.
